What have our children been learning in Year 4 across the Summer Term?
Summer 1 Learning
The Summer Term began with Year 4 becoming Historians once more. Initially we had to untangle the clues to work out which time period we were in.
Once we had established we were in the Ancient Greek period, we used our knowledge of chronological order to place this era on our time line.
Using a range of different sources, we researched information about the Ancient Greeks. We learnt that Ancient Greeks were famous for Myths about Gods and Goddesses. Miss Murcott read the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. However, Year 4 evaluated that the language and vocabulary that was used wasn’t engaging enough so they decided to write their own versions. To do this, they stepped in to the roles of Theseus to persuade his mother to let him go on the quest or his mother to persuade Theseus not to go on the quest. We then used descriptive phrases to describe what the Minotaur looked like so Theseus knew what he was looking for. We also used the app Switch Zoo to design our own mythical creature to describe. We then wrote a particularly descriptive piece of writing using alliteration, similes and phrases to describe Theseus’ voyage to the island of Crete and ended our myth by describing the gruesome battle that took place between Theseus and the Minotaur. It didn’t end well for the mighty, monstrous beast!
Our maths learning this half term has involved us moving our learning on from fractions to converting fractions in to decimals. We have also used our knowledge of place value to order decimal numbers.
We then transferred this learning to understand measurement. This involved us converting different units of measurement to help greengrocers, builders and chemists. We then ended the half term by learning about perimeter and area. We now know that perimeter is the length all the way around the outside of a shape and the area is the space inside the shape.
Our final adventure this half term was ‘What’s that racket?’ where we once again became Scientists to investigate different aspects of sound.
We designed and conducted an experiment to help Miss Murcott’s friend who have a band to work out which was the loudest instrument. Miss Murcott then challenged us to see if we could use just a bottle and some water to investigate pitch so that we could play the nursery rhyme Baa Baa Black Sheep.
This half term we have really developed our love for reading as we have invited parents in to share our Guided Reading books with and we have also been in to the Reception class to enjoy books with the younger children.
