What have our children been learning in Year 1 across the Spring Term?
Spring 1 Learning
Throughout this adventure year 1 became geographical explorers! The children followed maps of the local area to identify and justify human and physical features. The children used their walk within the local area to work towards writing a recount of their adventure. We learned how to use connecting adverbs to structure our writing and used the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘so’ to build compound sentences. The children also explored the use of suffixes on words and added these to the verb they were using to write their recount. To finish off their adventure the children creatively designed and built a model of our local area and used a design brief to evaluate their work against. They were very proud of their final piece as you can see a lot of hard work went into it.
The children have been exploring place value this half term and have done lots of interactive activities using number to further develop their understanding of place value. The have used pictures and objects to represent numbers in different ways and have used a variety of activities to find more than and less than. The children then moved on to explore number bonds and used their ‘body counting’ to further support them in this. They used a range of concrete resources to explore number bonds and will be moving on to investigate the pictorial and abstract aspects of number bonds.
Spring 2 Learning
Year 1 have immersed themselves in the celebration of Diwali this half term. We have learnt about the story of ‘Rama and Sita’ by ordering and rewriting the story. Throughout our learning, we explored how to engage and impress a reader. Skills such as using capital letters for proper nouns and applying a range of story language to make our stories really exciting were at the heart of this adventure! The children were very proud of their stories and were eager to share them with their peers.
Year 1 have explored ‘Light and Dark’ this half term and were curious to investigate the ‘black box’ which appeared in the classroom! The children explained why it was so dark inside and applied this to their learning about shadows on the playground. We were then very excited to show off our learning to our parents when they came in to help us create a shadow puppet show! We had a lovely afternoon together and all the children had chance to present their puppet shows.
The children then progressed their learning further by identifying materials used in relation to light and dark and suggesting reasons for this by stating the properties of the material.
Within maths this half term we have had a focus on finding half or a quarter of a shape, amount or a number. The children explored this by applying their learning to the context of their very own ‘Perfect Pizza and Cake’ shop! This provided the children with the opportunity to physically divide and share the concrete objects; enabling them to then apply their learning to different contexts.
We then progressed to introducing the children to answering word problems involving repeated addition. The children approached problems in a variety of ways and used concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract calculations to investigate and record their answers.
Reading and Spelling
Year 1 will engage in independent reading and spelling practise throughout the week, therefore please ensure all children have their reading books, diaries and spelling booklets in school daily. We appreciate all the support you will give them to help practise at home in preparation for their tests.
Year 1 have their PE sessions on a Monday and Tuesday. Sessions may be completed outside so tracksuits and trainers are advised. Earrings must not be worn for PE.
