Silkmore Primary Academy

Year 6

Meet the Teachers

I’m Miss Short and I’m the Year 6 class teacher and PE lead. I have been at Silkmore since September 2019 and have enjoyed immersing myself in the curriculum offered here. I am excited by the challenge Year 6 has to offer with SATS and I am eager to develop and encourage engagement within different sports.

When I’m not at work, I love to spend time with my family and enjoy going on walks with my dog.

I'm Miss Hackett, I am a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, currently working in the year 6 class. I have worked at Silkmore for 6 years and have worked across the school from Year 1 to Year 6 supporting both pupils and teachers.

Outside of school, I enjoy reading, watching movies and eating out.

We believe Year 6 is the year children start to become truly independent learners, readying themselves for the world of high school and finding their feet in terms of who they want to be and how they are going to work to get there.

What We Teach

The content of the National Curriculum is delivered and built upon with discrete lessons, which allow children to learn the key knowledge and skills they need later in their journey with us.

In writing, we focus on a text for a half term, gleaning fantastic vocabulary and writing structure from expert authors, before using the text as a basis for our own writing.

In Maths we follow the White Rose planning and content. This is supplemented by weekly ‘Flashback’ sessions which allow pupils to re-visit previously taught content.

In Year 6, children are prepared for the end of KS2 assessments (SATS tests), which take place in May. There will be additional catch-up interventions as well as lots of supplementary work to ensure that the COVID gap doesn’t become an obstacle for our children. Regular practice will become second nature to the children - unbeknown to them - during lessons and extra after school clubs will be taking place after the Christmas holidays.

Our classroom learning is complemented by weekly PE sessions, Forest School sessions, AIM HIGH lessons and other National Curriculum subjects.

How you can help your child

If your child is in Year 6 you can support their learning by:

  • Practising their weekly spellings.

  • Practising all the times tables to help children develop instant recall of all facts up to 12x12.

  • Reading every day.

  • Giving them opportunities to be independent at home.

  • Allowing children to practise basic ICT skills such as typing, editing and presenting work

  • Supporting your child to access their home learning sites: Timestable Rock stars, Maths Seeds, Oxford Reading Buddy and Lexia.

  • Completing work set on a Friday and making sure your child brings this back to school.
