Welcome to Year 2!
Here at Silkmore Primary Academy we aim to provide first class learning and enriching opportunities for all our children. This is no different even within the current circumstances we find ourselves. Therefore, all our mini-missions aim to promote and cultivate a desire to learn and thrive within the safety of our own Y2 bubble.

In Year 2, we aspire to be the best that we can be. Our aim high values encompass all that we do and learn. We use our weekly Aim High sessions to discuss what we want to achieve and how we are going to get there. Each week we have a star of the week, this child is one who has exceeded expectations and has consistently followed our school values. Our classroom is a positive one, where we encourage each other, smile every day and are friends with every one!
Routines & Notices
Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that you have the correct PE kit in school on these days (white top, black shorts or tracksuit bottoms, black pumps or trainers) If children do have their ears pierced, we do ask that their earring are removed before children come to school.
On a Thursday, weekly spellings and times tables practice will be emailed home. The spellings should be learnt ready for a quiz the following Friday.
Reading books will be sent home on a Friday and should be returned to school on the following Thursday. This is to allow a period of quarantine over the weekend.
Reading is central to all children’s education and the school curriculum so therefore it is essential that children read daily. There are a range of eBooks available via your child’s class login.
In our first Mini-Mission, we found ourselves in the land of Far, Far Away. We explored Shrek’s swamp and used our knowledge of word classes alongside new grammar skills such as preposition phrases and expanded noun phrases to write fantastic setting descriptions.
Our final Mini-Mission of the first half term was “Through the Keyhole”. During this mission, we looked closely at how animals are adapted to their habitats. We explored key features and adaptions some animals have made in order to survive. We then write a super explanation text on our chosen animal using a range of adverbs and conjunctions to help us explain.
In Autumn 2, Year 2 will build on their geographical knowledge by looking at continents, countries and capital cities. Alongside this, they will look carefully at human and physical geography. They will also take part in D&T projects including food technology linked to their mini mission learning. Throughout this term, their writing will focus on consolidating prior skills whilst broadening their vocabulary and learning new skills.
Across the spring term, Year 2 will delve into history, computing, science and geography mini missions. They will begin to discover important figures from the past and make comparisons to modern day by conducting their own research! In science, they will be exploring exercise and nutrition to ensure we are all happy and healthy.
In Summer term, Year 2 will continue to build on their knowledge in history, D&T and science. A key focus for the start of this term will be diversity and learning about key significant figures from different backgrounds. In D&T they will have the excitement of being able to design and create their own product through an entrepreneurial process. Our final mission will apply our knowledge of writing to a new skill of poetic writing.
Our first maths unit is based around Place Value. This will involve the children investigating numbers. We will be counting, recognising and partitioning numbers to 100. Lots of practical learning will take place during this unit as this learning will form the basis of our learning for the year ahead.
