What have our children been learning in Year 5 across the Summer Term?
Summer 1 Learning
Our first mini adventure this term was ‘A Mayan Mystery’. With a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory themed classroom, we discovered that Mayans were the first civilisation to discover chocolate! Year 5 spent 4 weeks becoming experts on one aspect of Mayan history; they then decided on an original way (using PowerPoint presentations, pieces of drama, posters and Mayan hot chocolate tasting) to present their findings to the rest of the class. They also (based on discovering that Roald Dahl had an unpublished secret room in the chocolate factory) spent 4 weeks developing their descriptive writing skills to be able to create their own chapter for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. They used figurative language, direct speech and a range of punctuation to create some mouth-watering, fantastically descriptive new rooms in the factory.
Our next mini adventure was ‘The Circle of Life’. The children entered the classroom to find our new class pets: caterpillars! We have spent the last 2 weeks observing them as they have been growing and have now cocooned… we are all very excited for them to hatch into butterflies! The children have also spent 2 weeks preparing for a class debate regarding whether keeping animals in zoos is ethical. To help us with our debate, we have been exploring adverbials and colons to introduce lists. We have had some very interesting debates already regarding the controversial subject.
