What have our children been learning in Year 6 across the Spring Term?
Spring 1 Learning
Year 6 have spent the half term developing their skills as mathematicians. They have been provided with real life problems to solve; particularly problems surrounding measures. The children were actively involved in the building renovation taking place. They helped the builders and project managers with their secure understanding of measure. Year 6 were then very excited to be provided with a brand new classroom, which includes its very own Zen Garden. We have enjoyed numerous reading sessions in this garden.
The children have also ventured back in time to the Victorian age to attend 'Grammar School'. Children have furthered their knowledge and understanding on key grammatical concepts whilst learning more about the importance of this era in British history. The children thoroughly enjoyed presenting their chronological reports to Miss Mills and their families.
Spring 2 Learning
Year 6 have been on a real adventure during the learning in 'Gramm-arrrrr Me Hearties'. They have travelled the Sentence Seas' and re-capped on key writing skills in preparation for Summer 1 'writing at a distance' opportunities. Children have acquired a deep understanding of the relevant knowledge, skills and understanding that equip a writer.
We finished this adventure in style by inviting parents into the learning during our 'Treasure Hunt and parents were excited to use Ipads for QR codes. The children led this session impeccably by sharing their learning experiences with parents.
During maths, children have had plenty of opportunities to apply their current understanding of decimals, percentages and fractions to a number of complex problems.
The Year 6 team have been very impressed by the children's commitment to their learning by attending a number of SATs boosters across the half term. Well done Year 6.
Reading and Spelling
Year 6 will take part in reading and spelling for 20 minutes each day. They will be issued with individualised spelling books to practise their spellings at home. There will be five spellings to learn per fortnight. We appreciate all the support you will give them to help practise at home in preparation for their tests. Reading books are needed in school every day so there is every opportunity to develop your children's reading skills.
A Year 6 Maths and English workbook will be sent home every Friday, with one page highlighted in each. Please can these be completed and sent back by the following Wednesday. Children will have support at school if needed.
Year 6’s PE lessons are on a Tuesday afternoon and a Wednesday morning. Sessions may be completed outside so tracksuits and trainers are advised. Earrings must not be worn for PE.
Music is delivered to Year 6 by 'Rock It' Music on a Tuesday afternoon.
